The HarperCollins Focus Trade group includes imprints HarperCollins Leadership, Harper Select, Harper Horizon, and Harper Muse and is a boutique publishing house within the larger HarperCollins organization. We work with authors who have a great story to tell, advice to give, and a skill to share. We develop content across a broad base of subjects, including but not limited to personal development, leadership, memoir, history, wellness, and fiction.

 

We are a small team and select projects that we are passionate about championing through the entire publishing process. The team operates in a start-up environment within a larger corporate setting, and specializes in developing memorable messaging alongside great content, building lasting brands, and leading the industry in marketing innovation.

 

The Marketing Director develops and executes marketing plans for book releases in partnership with authors, their teams, and external firms. This position will also carry out strategic development of our digital marketing landscape and develop online advertising, consumer targeting, consumer messaging, SEO and keyword strategy, seasonal marketing campaigns, and social media strategy. 

 

The ideal candidate is a marketing innovator who is experienced in marketing campaigns and online advertising; possesses strong leadership and project management skills; and is motivated to achieve business objectives. The Marketing Director works closely with the Sr. Marketing Director and HarperCollins Focus team of marketers, publicists, editors, and publisher in a collaborative environment. The Marketing Director regularly interacts with other teams in the company such as sales, production, and marketing operations and is a project leader with authors and literary agents.

 

This is a hybrid position based out of our Nashville, TN office.

Responsibilities

  • Lead book launch campaigns with the goal of achieving the revenue and profit goals for each fiscal year.
  • Hands-on management of paid advertising across Amazon (AMS), Meta, TikTok, Pinterest, Google Ads, Reddit, Spotify, and LinkedIn — comprising approximately 60% of the role's responsibilities.
  • Creates comprehensive advertising and promotional campaigns – lead advertising development such as creative direction and writing copy.
  • Ensures primary marketing expenditures are effective and within the budgeted percentage for the fiscal year.
  • Works to grow backlist sales through continued author partnerships, Amazon advertising, and other online marketing.
  • Team Collaboration: Assists Sr. Marketing Director with one-off needs, partners with Marketing Director on advertising management, and receives support from Marketing Associate.
  • Directs the work of external firms in executing assigned pieces of the plan and fostering productive relationships with authors, literary agents, and their organizations as well as key internal partners.
  • Works with internal publicists or outside PR firms to ensure that each new release garners strategic national, regional, and local coverage from broadcast, print, and online media.
  • Regularly coordinates with sales team and provides marketing and publicity update reports. Presents titles at sales conferences.
  • Organizes national author tours and special events for major releases.
  • Continually experiments with new approaches to traditional and non-traditional book promotion tactics.

Qualifications

Work Experience: 7-8 years of marketing experience with at least 3 years in publishing or related field.  3+ years online advertising experience.

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in marketing, publicity, communications, or related area, required. Master’s degree preferred.

 

Industry Knowledge: Knowledgeable in digital marketing and analytics best practices. Understanding of marketing, brand management, and publicity. Familiarity with book publishing highly preferred.
