Overview

The Global Controller will serve as the senior leader responsible for the integrity, timeliness, and accuracy of HarperCollins’ global financial reporting. This role oversees worldwide accounting operations, internal controls, technical accounting, tax, and financial policies. The Global Controller will be a strategic partner to executive leadership and a key liaison with News Corp headquarters, providing thought leadership on accounting matters and driving continuous improvement across the global finance organization.

Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Global Accounting Operations

  • Lead all global accounting operations and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close and consolidation processes to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial statements.
  • Ensure adherence to US GAAP and local statutory requirements across all international markets.
  • Establish, refine, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and systems that support scalability, financial integrity, and operational efficiency.
  • Partner closely with News Corp HQ on technical accounting matters and financial reporting.

Internal Controls, Compliance & Audit

  • Maintain a robust, global internal control environment aligned with regulatory and corporate standards.
  • Lead the annual external audit process; act as primary liaison to independent auditors, ensuring efficient and successful audit completion.
  • Oversee global tax compliance and strategy, including coordination of domestic and international tax requirements.

Technical Accounting & Strategic Transactions

  • Research, interpret, and document technical accounting positions, including areas such as business combinations, revenue recognition, consolidations, product costing, and other complex matters.
  • Lead the accounting workstreams for M&A, including due diligence, purchase accounting, and integration of newly acquired businesses.

Process Improvement & Systems Transformation

  • Identify and implement initiatives that enhance financial performance, strengthen controls, improve close efficiency, and modernize systems.
  • Drive global standardization and process optimization across accounting teams and business units.

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Provide strong leadership to domestic and international Finance Directors/Controllers, ensuring consistency in practices and alignment with corporate policies.
  • Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing global accounting organization with clear roles, professional development programs, and succession planning.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, collaboration, and service orientation.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support strategic initiatives and special projects as assigned by the CFO or CEO.

Qualifications

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • CPA (or international equivalent) required.

Experience

  • Minimum 15 years of accounting/finance experience, including 5–10 years in a senior Controller role for a large, complex, global organization.
  • Big Four public accounting experience in a leadership role strongly preferred.
  • Strong technical expertise in US GAAP, consolidations, foreign currency, income tax accounting (ASC 740 / FAS 109), international taxation, treasury, and risk management.
  • Media/entertainment and/or consumer product industry experience is a plus.

Leadership & Skills

  • Demonstrated success leading accounting teams across multiple geographies in an international, matrixed environment.
  • Experience with M&A accounting, systems integration, and global process harmonization.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively present to senior management, Boards, auditors, and external partners.
  • High energy, strategic mindset, and hands-on approach; able to operate effectively at both conceptual and detail levels.
  • Commitment to service excellence and supporting the company’s growth objectives.

The salary range for this position is $300,000-$350,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure we are able to attract the best candidates. The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
