We are currently seeking an assisant editor who loves story and who is energetic, organized, and passionate about learning.

 

This is a hybrid position based out of our Nashville, TN office.

Responsibilities

Editorial and Author Relations

  • Coordinate reprint corrections
  • Assist with the catalog copy process and back-ad process, including reviewing, proofing, editing, and routing
  • Assist the acquisitions editors with various data and research needs
  • Work with acquisitions editors and authors on manuscript deadlines, copy due dates, and other project needs

Research

  • Manage the SEO keyword and BISAC process
  • Research competing/comparable titles 
  • Research prospective authors
  • Create sales reports for analysis

Project Management

  • Support acquisitions editors with our project management database
  • Track and distribute proposals/submissions
  • Assist with data management and strategic updates of online copy
  • Assist acquisitions editors and marketers in creating high-profile publishing offers
  • Revise and update templates and forms as needed

Administrative

  • Schedule and coordinate agendas for editorial meetings, titling meetings, and alignment meetings with the sales team
  • Send reminder emails for various deadlines/updates (including due dates and action points)
  • Assist with hiring freelancers and creating contract/addendum/Work-for-Hire requests 
  • Find new ways to streamline paper and information flow 
  • Assist Acquisitions Editors with mail and scheduling as needed
  • Print and bind manuscripts
  • Process invoices
  • Various mailings for the editorial team, as needed

Growth Opportunities

After training and mastery of essential skills are complete, the Assistant Editor has the potential to:

  • Manage select frontlist titles through production including coordinating with the typesetting and design teams, managing all proofreading, and ensuring timely delivery of final files to the printer
  • Manage all backlist (TPCs and repacks) and custom products through production
  • Evaluate proposals/submissions as assigned

Qualifications

Knowledge/Work Experience: 1+ year of experience in publishing

 

Education: Bachelor's degree in English or similar field

 

Industry Knowledge: Familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style preferred

 

Skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong command of the English language
  • Ability to anticipate needs, plan ahead, and effectively encourage planning ahead
  • Proven organizational skills, with ability to prioritize and manage a wide variety of tasks and resources across multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to professionally and cordially interact with authors and agents
  • Ability to distill numerous pieces of information and communicate key points to others
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with timely communication, especially expressing difficult/sensitive information tactfully; ability to identify team conflict and communication problems
  • Ability to quickly learn and use electronic databases and new software applications; maintain awareness of new and emerging technologies
