Overview

HarperCollins Publisher seeks a Designer to work in an exciting, fast-paced environment on Adult Trade Interior Books (fiction and non-fiction). The Designer will be responsible for all stages of interior book design for assigned titles from manuscript to bound books and will work on projects of all levels of complexity. This position reports to the Design Manager. Hybrid or remote location status will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Design 1-color book interiors with opportunity to work on 4-color interiors as per Design Manager’s discretion. Prepare and route design samples for approval. 
  • Create tight templates InDesign files for composition group to page books downstream. Review page proofs at various stages. Input text corrections using InDesign, when applicable. Post files to Printer, when needed.
  • Design 1-color and 4-color photo inserts.
  • Manage art program for assigned titles under supervision, as needed. Evaluate digital images for good print quality; review and mark-up art proofs to ensure best print quality  
  • Work closely with Design Manager, designers, editors, production editors, production, and composition teams. 
  • Under supervision, commission independent contractors (mapmakers and illustrators); negotiate fees, generate graphic artist contracts, and process invoices.
  • Meet deadlines, monitor components, track status of titles, and maintain budgets for assigned titles.
  • Work on offsets from outside publishers as well as paperback conversions: update frontmatter, input text corrections, adjust pages and photo inserts to fit trim size.
  • Traffic files via our RSuite workflow system and other file transfer systems.
  • Access, download, and archive files to Digital Asset Management System.
  • Assist with work overflow for titles from other groups within the Design Department.
  • Learn Harper’s various procedures and systems. Training will be provided.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2+ years of book interior design experience (preferable), or related graphic design experience.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency with Adobe InDesign on a Mac.
  • Discerning eye for typography and graphic design.
  • Desktop typesetting skills, a plus.
  • Collaborative demeanor and a team-player.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator is a plus.
  • Project management skills: detail-oriented, well-organized with an ability to juggle multiple projects on various stages to meet deadlines. 
  • Good written and oral communication skills required.

The salary for this position is $60,000-$65,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company.
