Overview

HarperCollins Children’s Books, one of the leading publishers of children’s and teen books, is currently seeking a Publicity Manager to join its publicity team.  This candidate will work on a wide variety of bestselling titles across all imprints with a focus on YA authors with crossover adult audience appeal, celebrity author projects, franchise/Estate publishing programs, and media tie-ins.  The ideal candidate is creative, enthusiastic, and has a positive, can-do attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive, develop and execute publicity campaigns for picture books, middle grade, and young adult novels, with a focus on celebrity author projects, franchise/Estate publishing programs, and media tie-ins.
  • Liaise with adult division on marketing/publicity opportunities for YA authors with crossover appeal to adult audience.
  • Pitch and secure interviews, features, and review coverage with national and local media, including broadcast, print, podcasts, and online blogs and sites.
  • Actively develop and maintain relationships with media outlets for potential coverage including TV/radio producers, book reviewers, as well as booksellers/event coordinators.
  • Plan and execute author appearances including multi-city book tours, group author tours, local appearances, school visits, and special events.
  • Coordinate HCCB author appearances ABA Institutes and regional trade shows with sales team.
  • Arrange all travel for assigned authors and create tour schedules.
  • Write compelling press releases, pitches, and other promotional materials relating to a book’s campaign.
  • Brief authors and editors on how to communicate key messages in media interviews/appearances.
  • Attend several festivals and conventions a year and accompany authors to media bookings and events as needed.
  • Build and maintain strong and collaborative relationships with authors, literary agents, media contacts and internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee budgets for assigned titles.
  • Regularly present at sales and marketing meetings.
  • Manage at least one direct report.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of publicity experience required with an emphasis placed on booking national media in both traditional and digital outlets and author events
  • Experience in children’s publishing or media is preferred
  • Proven ability to generate creative angles, pitches, and secure off the book page coverage
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to represent campaigns to authors, agents and internally in meetings
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational, attention to detail, and time-management skills
  • A college degree or equivalent experience

The salary for this position is $75,000-$80,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure we are able to attract the best candidates. The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
