Are you inspired by the power of the right book at the right time to impact a young reader’s life? If so, good news: HarperCollins Children’s Books is seeking an Editorial Assistant to provide administrative and editorial support to a collaborative, quirky, mission-driven team at Clarion Books, an imprint in the Children’s division. The Editorial Assistant will support two seasoned editors on a range of projects, with an emphasis on picture books and middle grade and including the occasional graphic novel and young adult titles, by exciting debut talent as well as award-winning and bestselling authors such as Linda Sue Park, David Wiesner, Mary Downing Hahn, Gary Soto, Gary D. Schmidt, Raissa Figueroa, Kate Milford, Avi, Saadia Faruqi, Lauren Castillo, and Karen Cushman.

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative and editorial support, including coordinating department workflow and calendars, proofreading materials, scheduling meetings, and processing expense reports.
  • Reads and evaluates manuscript submissions, and assists with preparation of acquisitions materials, including conducting sales research, creating P&Ls, Acquisitions Memos, and drafting contract paperwork.
  • Maintains and updates author files, review quotes, and records and assists with contractual payments. 
  • Drafts copy for individual titles, including title sheets, flap copy, and selling copy; updates backlist copy; generates and maintains metadata; conducts positioning research.
  • Reviews production stages for physical and ebooks, maintaining intra-departmental communication and deadlines.
  • Corresponds and nurtures positive relationships with authors, illustrators, agents, and industry colleagues; maintains social media presence for select projects.
  • Attends meetings with and acts as liaison to other internal departments (e.g. Publicity, Marketing, Managing Editorial, Production, etc.).

Qualifications

 

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • College degree or equivalent work experience
  • Prior relevant work experience (including but not limited to internships and/or coursework)
  • Must have a passion for children’s books, knowledge of the marketplace, and keen interest in learning about the business of publishing
  • Proven ability to set priorities under pressure and multi-task; must be highly organized, flexible, patient, and detail-oriented
  • Must be an efficient, self-motivated, problem-solver with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have a sense of humor
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, and Power Point

This role is currently based out of New York, NY. You will need to commute to the office when it reopens.
