We are seeking a dynamic, mission-driven, market-savvy editorial leader to acquire and develop a select list of leading children’s books that promote the publishing vision of Versify: creating books that electrify, edify, and exemplify with accessible and powerful prose and poetry that celebrates the lives and reflects the possibilities of all children

Responsibilities

  • Acquire and edit approximately 10 children’s books per year (picture book through YA).
  • Consider and inform on all imprint acquisitions (about 20 total per year) focusing on imprint revenue growth; list balance, and building author/illustrator careers.
  • As spokesperson for Versify, promote imprint titles at conferences and appearances and through networking with teachers, librarians, gatekeepers and other industry leaders. 
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with agents, authors, and illustrators. 
  • Manage and oversee 2 editors to build on the goals of Versify. 
  • Prepare or coordinate acquisitions materials, including but not limited to p&ls, comp title research, and project highlights, and present titles to editorial, sales, marketing, and publicity teams. 
  • Create or coordinate sales and marketing materials, including but not limited to pub cards, catalog copy, launch presentations and cover copy. 
  • Work cooperatively and productively with production, design, publicity, marketing, and sales departments to ensure great publication outcomes. 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8-10 years of relevant editorial experience 
  • Acquisition and publication of multiple profitable and/or critically viable projects 
  • Excellent negotiation skills and strong presentation skills 
  • Established relationships with relevant agents and industry colleagues 
  • Extensive experience reviewing contracts 
  • Strong understanding and awareness of general marketplace and relevant market segments within industry 
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels across the organization 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office 

This role is currently based out of New York, New York. You will need to commute to the office when it reopens.
