Metadata Analyst

HarperCollins is seeking a Metadata Analyst to join the Online Sales Team. This position will be responsible for ensuring our title metadata is optimized to improve online discoverability and increase sales. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, and the ability to recognize and analyze online search and consumer trends. In this role, the Metadata Analyst will work closely with their Online Sales colleagues, editorial, marketing, and the data science team to identify title and category opportunities to improve metadata, and will develop and share best practices to optimize metadata and grow online sales.


  • Review title metadata across the catalog to ensure it is optimized for search, and track and analyze impact of metadata changes on sales results.
  • Stay abreast of emerging search and consumer trends and adjust existing metadata to improve SEO, and collaborate closely across departments to circulate information for action.
  • Partner with Data Science and IT on developing tools to analyze results and create automation tools to scale metadata activities.
  • Research, test, maintain documentation, and present SEO best practices presentations to key internal stakeholders, including editorial and marketing colleagues.
  • Analyze, prepare, and present search trends and title opportunities to publishing that identify opportunities for backlist and acquisitions.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the HarperCollins Amazon sales team with recommendations on marketing and merchandising initiatives, including managing on-site merchandising, curating store pages, and coordinating Amazon pay-per-click advertising.
  • Field general requests regarding SEO and metadata from internal stakeholders.
  • Analyze category and title performance metrics to identify metadata and sales opportunities for frontlist and backlist titles.


  • College degree or equivalent work experience
  • 2+ years of publishing sales, digital marketing, or metadata optimization experience
  • Knowledge of online sales channel, evolving e-commerce trends and overall book market a plus
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and take initiative in a deadline-driven environment
  • Exceptional analytical skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with employees across all levels within an organization
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, with an emphasis on Excel and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of relational databases (SQL or similar) and visualization tools (Tableau or similar) preferred
  • Interest in and in-depth understanding of metadata, SEO, and similar concepts

This role is currently based out of New York, New York. You will need to commute to the office when it reopens.
