Responsible for the developmental editing and general editorial oversight of assigned titles up to printer-ready files. Most titles assigned to this position will be Zondervan Academic titles in the field of biblical studies and biblical languages with a special focus on Old Testament, Hebrew, and the cognate languages. The primary focus will be on titles requiring an excellent knowledge of the biblical languages, but especially biblical Hebrew. Zondervan Books and other nonfiction titles from Zondervan Reflective or Study Resources may be assigned from time to time.

Responsibilities

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in meetings for handoff of acceptable manuscripts with Acquisitions Editors and maintain contact with these individuals as needed concerning the projects which they have acquired.
  2. Participate in Editorial and Publishing meetings as appropriate.
  3. Participate as needed in meetings of the marketing team.
  4. Request and review the internal design and pass along illustrative material to composition. Work closely with the Senior Visual Content Editor to make sure all images meet quality standards.
  5. Make sure credit lines and permissions are added and the manuscript is coded using HCCP proprietary mark up language, HCML coding.
  6. Carry out either light or heavy copyediting as needed in accordance with current Production Editor manuscript responsibilities.
  7. Coordinate work with freelance editors as needed.
  8. Responsible for effective communication with authors, partner organizations, and writers.
  9. Participate in Production Editor staff meetings and general staff meetings.
  10. Annually attend ETS and IBR/AAR/SBL national conventions.

Qualifications

Knowledge:

  1. Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and standard proofreading and editing marks, required. Knowledge of the latest editions of The Chicago Manual of Style, The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style, and the SBL Handbook of Style,
  2. Good knowledge of the English Bible, biblical studies, Christian theology, church history and historical theology, required. An excellent knowledge of biblical Hebrew and Aramaic, and a good working knowledge of New Testament Greek, required.

 

Work Experience:

Some copyediting and proofreading experience, required with at least 4 years editorial experience, preferred.

 

Education: B.A. degree, preferably in the Humanities/Liberal Arts, with strong emphases on English, Literature, biblical studies, and Christian doctrine; advanced degrees in biblical studies and theology (such as MDiv, ThM, MA), preferred and must either have an earned doctorate (ThD or PhD) or be a candidate for the same with only the completion of the dissertation remaining, with the major focus on Old Testament studies and biblical Hebrew and related cognate languages. We will consider candidates at the Editor level who have completed all the other requirements for the doctorate but have not yet completed the dissertation.

 

Industry Knowledge: Basic knowledge of the Christian book market, Zondervan competitors, and of key Christian authors preferred.

 

Skills

  1. Good written and verbal communication skills.
  2. Basic computer skills with the aptitude to learn HCML coding, Zondervan Project Server, and RSuite.
  3. Demonstrated aptitude for and interest in macro editing, copy editing, and proofreading.
