Fantastic career opportunity to be a Senior Editor with a top-five publisher and to work with some of the most influential authors in Christian publishing. The Children’s and Gift division at HarperCollins Christian Publishing is seeking a Senior Editor to manage an array of high-design two- and four-color books, including devotionals, gift books, guided journals, lifestyle books, and more. Duties include project management of approximately 20 titles per year, both author-driven and proprietary, hiring and working with freelance writers, substantive editing, as well as production editing, including managing copyediting, proofreading, collating, style coding, and other editorial processes.

 

The Senior Editor will have the opportunity to work on key projects with high-profile authors and will manage projects from manuscript to completion. 

 

Experience working with four-color books or magazines is required. Please consider including in your cover letter examples of key projects and authors you have personally managed that include the types of books listed above.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintain editorial schedule for approximately 20 titles per year.
  2. Manage and maintain strong relationships with key authors.
  3. Perform substantive and developmental editorial work on select titles. This includes editing to maintain and enhance author’s style and voice.
  4. Copyedit, proofread, collate, and route cover copy, catalog copy, cover mechanicals, and other materials related to the editorial process of our books.
  5. Collate and check proofs; copyedit and proofread miscellaneous material (e.g., front matter, back matter, indexes) and flap copy, mechanicals, and proofs.
  6. Hire freelance work-for-hire writers, copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers, and oversee their work.
  7. Work with art directors, artists, photographers, and designers on products to select art, photos, and interior design that supports and enhances the manuscript.
  8. Maintain budgets for editorial expenses (writers, compilers, copyeditors, proofreaders) for assigned books.
  9. Work with authors to secure permissions, releases, and endorsements and to obtain approval for text design, copyediting, cover design, and cover text.
  10. Prepare styled Word manuscripts for typesetting and design with HarperCollins’s proprietary markup language.
  11. Maintain familiarity with market trends and bring new ideas for authors and brand extensions.
  12. Create high quality industry-leading products on time and on budget.

 

Qualifications

Knowledge: Extremely familiar with Chicago Manual of Style. A strong grasp of proper English, grammar, and an eagle eye for errors. Thorough knowledge of the Bible, theology and doctrine, and of the book editorial process required.

 

Work Experience: Minimum 5 years of editorial experience, required; work on four-color books or magazines required; Christian publishing preferred. Experience in communicating with authors or high-profile personalities.

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in English, writing, journalism, publishing, or related field.

 

Industry Knowledge: Clear understanding and experience with the Christian publishing industry preferred, including popular Christian authors, key Christian ministries, general Christian culture and trends. Experience working with four-color art and design required. Well versed in the Bible and various Bible translations.
