Sales and Retail Marketing Manager

We are seeking a Sales and Retail Marketing Manager to increase sales to BIPOC-owned bookstores and grow the overall sales of books by BIPOC authors across all channels.  This role will partner with the Sales and Publishing Divisions and will be a key sales liaison for the BIPOC channel.


This newly created role will encompass both sales and retail marketing functions by playing a critical role in bringing books by BIPOC authors to market and developing promotional opportunities for the BIPOC-owned bookstore channel.  This role will also work closely with the key account managers that serve the general trade book market on this initiative to maximize distribution of our BIPOC catalog to all accounts.


This exciting opportunity will offer high visibility as this position will regularly participate in discussions on sales strategy at key internal meetings. This position will report to the SVP, Sales General Books while working with others in sales management in both adult and children’s books and is based in New York City. 


  • Work with BIPOC-owned bookstores and HarperCollins sales reps to identify marketplace priorities and maximize sales across all channels for both adult and children’s titles.
  • Collaborate with the Sales team to develop a business plan to achieve significant point-of-sales growth of BIPOC publishing in the marketplace.
  • Conceptualize and write a frequent newsletter for accounts highlighting authors, books, and marketing opportunities.
  • Provide feedback on acquisitions, including reading submissions and the creation of “pitch” decks for specific acquisitions discussions.
  • Identify content-gaps in the marketplace to bring to publishers for content development.
  • Contribute to the budgeting and sales forecasting process for BIPOC authors.
  • Work with all sales channels, including Field Sales, Telesales, National Accounts, Mass Merch Sales, Special Markets, Libraries and International.
  • Create title/content collections and sales promotions for accounts – frontlist and backlist.
  • Attendance at trade shows and conferences, and account meetings as needed.


  • 4 year college degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience required
  • Knowledge of current publishing and marketplace trends as well as familiarity with the BIPOC book channel
  • Strong written, verbal and analytical skills
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint and internal systems
  • Travel required on an as needed basis
