Product Manager, Direct-to-Consumer

The Product Manager, Direct-to-Consumer is a focal role in a team at the heart of a high-profile, strategic initiative at HarperCollins Publishers, the second largest book publisher in the world.  With this DTC team, we are marrying two hundred years of history and content with new business models in a fast-growing, internal startup with tremendous focus from senior leadership.


The Product Manager, Direct-to-Consumer will report to the Senior Director, Corporate Strategy and Innovation - Global, with a dotted line reporting structure to the Director, Solutions Management.  This individual will provide the lynchpin of the day-to-day operations of a growing subscription business within HarperCollins' children's book division.


The ideal candidate will have proven experience in direct-to-consumer businesses, ease in leading though influence, keen strategic vision, and numeric fluency, along with the requisite project management and organizational skills required to manage a product and program as it grows.  The candidate will support leadership through day-to-day execution, agenda-setting, KPI reviews, key projects, and more.  The ideal candidate will be able to think big but also execute on details.  You will be a true partner to your managers and an integral part of the group.  We are so excited to welcome a new member of the team.


  • Working closely with the Senior Director, Corporate Strategy and Innovation - Global to:
    • Establish the short-, medium-, and long-term goals and strategies of the DTC business
    • Set ongoing actions to achieve these goals, and regularly report on progress and KPIs
    • Prioritize, manage, and execute the everyday actions to run, drive, and grow the business - managing this work across vendors, internal team members (junior to senior), and one's self
    • Understand the role of the DTC program within the larger HarperCollins business and the Children's division specifically, and work with divisional and central leaders to prioritize the program appropriately
    • Understand the relevant HarperCollins product catalogs for DTC
    • Lead the DTC working group: Senior Financial Analyst and Marketing Manager (Subscription) in daily execution of the program
    • Work with Sr. Dir. Corporate Strategy, Senior Financial Analyst, and Marketing Manager (Subscription) to define product configurations with eye to optimize profitability
    • Interact with Customer Service to provide insights and escalations to the leadership team
  • Working with the Director, Solutions Management to:
    • Execute systems/platforms, process, customer service, and other back office optimizations
    • Execute projects to delivery
    • Map systems and processes


  • Bachelor's degree with high proven achievement, MBA a plus
  • Minimum four year's prior product or project manager experience with proven track record, preferably in a direct-to-consumer capacity
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, Teams, etc.)
  • A history of working in a startup or a startup within a large organization a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to frame, contextualize, communicate, and simplify complex projects and problems
  • Fantastic ability to articulate complex ideas to influence people at all levels of an organization
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent ability to manage by influence
  • Fluency in the financial impacts of product and program decisions
  • Proven subscription experience and track record
  • Champion of efficiency and prioritization
  • Comfort juggling multiple projects, stakeholders, and priorities
  • A doer - nothing is too big or too small for this individual to take on
  • Genuine interest in books, publishing, and new business models
  • A proven track record in growing a business as it scales
  • Ability to work independently, and collaborate across a group
