  • Overview


    HarperCollins Publisher is seeking a Designer to join the Design Department, working in an exciting, fast-paced environment on fiction and non-fiction books. The designer is responsible for all stages of interior book design for assigned titles from manuscript to bound books. The Designer will work on books of simple to medium complexity, offsets and conversions.


    • Design book interior, including:
      • Prepare design samples for approval
      • Create tight desktop templates for original titles; input text corrections, when needed; and handle all stages of book production for assigned titles
      • Design photo inserts, binding die mechanicals and endpapers
      • Handle all stages of offsets and paperback conversions: update frontmatter, input text corrections, adjust pages and photo inserts to fit new trim size
      • Handle art program for assigned titles, when applicable: evaluate and prepare images for print; size and place images in digital files, occasional scanning, check T-prints
      • Collaborate with design manager, production editorial, editorial, production and composition teams
      • Meet tight deadlines and maintain budgets for assigned projects
      • Track myriad pieces on projects and keep accurate records
      • Download and upload files to RSuite workflow system during production cycle and final files to digital asset management system
    • Assist with other assignments and projects as assigned by manager


    • 4-year college degree or equivalent work experience
    • Must possess a minimum of 2+ years of prior relevant work experience
    • Collaborative demeanor and a team-player
    • Must demonstrate a proficient skill set in desktop publishing experience working with InDesign
    • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator is a plus
    • Detail-oriented and well-organized a must
    • Flexible: Ability to juggle multiple projects with tight deadlines on a given day
    • Good written and oral communication skills required
