    Essential Responsibilities:  Gain in-house counsel and contracts experience with a paid summer internship at HarperCollins Christian Publishing. As a part of our team, you will work on contracts, participate in research projects, and learn about the publishing industry. Students interested in contract law and business negotiations are encouraged to apply.  The summer associate will gain a broad exposure to the publishing process as well as be responsible for assisting general counsel and the contracts team in preparing, negotiating, and reviewing contracts.


    The intern will:

    • Assist Contract Managers in drafting, reviewing, and editing Author Contracts, Work-for-Hire Agreements, and Amendments to Contracts
    • Analyze and understand publishing agreements and licensing agreements
    • Attend team meetings, including but not limited to bi-weekly Contracts Manager meetings, negotiation preparations, and business review meetings
    • Serve as an assistant negotiator on behalf of the company in discussing rights agreements
    • Help develop an internal Contracts Style Guide for Contracts Managers
    • Prepare internal files for contract review meetings with Publisher
    • Research contract and agency trends
    • Complete an internal research memorandum for the legal department to serve as a writing sample
    • Some clerical work (e.g. photocopying, printing and binding manuscripts, filing, email, note taking, etc.)


    Required Status:  Must be a Fall 2020 First or Second Year Law Student, or a Third Year evening school student


    Education: First or Second Year Law Student who has completed a basic course in Contracts Law.


    Industry Knowledge: General understanding of the publishing industry or the Christian market is a plus, but not required.


    Skills: Candidates should be organized, detail-oriented, and demonstrate the ability to handle multiple projects. Additionally, candidates should be willing to participate in weekly meetings with other interns to learn about the publishing industry.
