  • Overview

    We’re looking for someone who has a desire to create meaningful content; who is experienced with managing complex projects and editorial schedules; who has a proven ability to provide leadership to an editorial and content creation team; who is able to manage time wisely and remain flexible; and who above all has a heart for God’s Word and a desire to help people meet with God in the pages of Scripture.


    The Senior Editor for the Thomas Nelson Bible and Study Resources team is responsible for independently managing and developing assigned and elected projects under the supervision of the Publisher. These may include new titles, repackaged/repurposed titles, line extensions, print and digital products. Additionally, the Senior Editor will provide the editorial team with guidance and oversight, ensuring that the editorial team effectively supports marketing, acquisitions, and product ideation. The Senior Editor should work productively in an interdisciplinary team environment and with outside partners, such as authors and freelance proofreaders, but also thrive as an independent self-starter.


    Editorial Team Leadership

    • Provide guidance and training to junior editors
    • Assign/review specific editorial and marketing-support tasks as needed
    • Review and update house style guides as needed 

    Project Management & Product Development

    • Oversee editorial team as they support marketing in creating D2C messaging and content, ad copy, packaging and catalog copy, etc.
    • Support Publisher in preparation for and presenting at Sales Conference.
    • Prepare and complete product proposal forms and share updates at publishing boards as needed.

    Editorial Skills

    • Manage the details of numerous complex editorial projects at once, including hiring and managing writers, copyeditors, and proofreaders; managing cross-functional teams’ contributions to the completion of a single project; and partnering with marketing to generate messaging for Bible products
    • Evaluate proposals and manuscripts
    • Perform or oversee editorial processes for all Bible projects, especially with high-profile authors and ministry partners
    • Work with Publisher and editorial team to maintain strong relationships with high-profile authors and ministry partners
    • Work with editors and authors on project schedules and manuscript deadlines
    • Oversee the review and editing of marketing copy as needed. Provide input for marketing copy for ads, selling and promotional materials
    • Willing to represent the Thomas Nelson Bible team at conferences and events

    Acquisitions and Product Development

    • Product ideation: partner with Publisher and marketing team to brainstorm new products and partnerships
    • Actively participate in developing new product proposals, reviewing product proposals to make recommendations for publishing, and analyzing current products
    • Assist Publisher with high-profile publishing offers
    • Travel occasionally with Publisher to meet prospective authors or ministry partners


    Work Experience: 7+ years’ editorial experience in publishing


    Education: Bachelor's degree in English or similar field, Master’s in biblical or theological field strongly preferred.


    Industry Knowledge:

    • Awareness of qualities and characteristics of major English-language Bible translations, including different translation philosophies
    • Knowledge of recent trends in Christian publishing
    • General familiarity with a variety of denominational beliefs and practices, including major Protestant denominations, Roman Catholicism, and Orthodox groups


    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong command of the English language
    • Ability to anticipate needs, plan ahead, and effectively encourage planning ahead
    • Proven organizational skills, with ability to prioritize and manage a wide variety of tasks and resources across multiple projects and meet deadlines
    • Ability to professionally and cordially interact with authors and agents
    • Ability to distill numerous pieces of information and communicate key points to others
    • Excellent verbal and written interpersonal skills, with timely communication, especially expressing difficult/sensitive information tactfully; ability to identify team conflict and communication problems
    • Strong project management skills, ability to multitask, works well under pressure   
    • Excellent organizational skills and budget management skills                               
    • Able to prioritize, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines             
    • Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style
    • Microsoft Office application skills (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
