    The Content Management department at HarperCollins Publishers is seeking an Assistant to work on the composition and development of both print and digital products. HarperCollins Publishers strives to build the best-in-market publications, agnostic of format, to meet today’s rapidly changing market needs, thereby best serving our authors.

     

    In this role you will assist with structuring manuscripts with markup that will output to various formats (physical books and eBooks), input formatting and typographical changes into book interiors, oversee progress of book interiors from early passes to end products, and create and QA eBook products. The ideal candidate will be someone with superior attention to detail, ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects, and with a keen interest in composition and typographical principles.

    Responsibilities

    Under the supervision of the Manager, Content Management:

    • Assess, markup, and transform manuscript documents
    • Input typographic/typesetting changes
    • Interact with several different publishing systems including but not limited to: CMS, routing/workflow, tracking, and Digital Asset Management systems
    • Set and maintain project schedules and milestones
    • Act as a liaison between departments
    • Assist with the creation of eBooks
    • Review files for Quality Assurance

    Qualifications

    • Relevant coursework or 6 months to 1 year prior experience preferred
    • Knowledge of book publishing, particularly copyediting/proofreaders marks is preferred
    • Strong awareness of current marketplace challenges and trends
    • Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign) strongly preferred
    • Proficiency using Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel) required
    • Familiarity and ability to work with both Mac and PC environments
    • Strong attention to detail, ability to prioritize and outstanding organizational skills
    • Strong follow-up and initiative
    • Excellent written communication skills
    • Familiarity with epub, epub validation requirements, and standards
    • Familiarity with common epub reading systems and functionality
    • Knowledge of XML, HTML(5), CSS(3), and eBook principles a plus
    • Ability to adapt to management direction and dynamic environments
