The Acquisitions Editor position acquires and develops book projects for the division, working with the author (or writer) to ensure that the completed manuscript meets accepted editorial standards in terms of content, scope, development of the subject, organization, and accuracy. He/she makes formal presentations at key meetings (such as Pub Board and Sales Conference); interfaces with sales and marketing and provides information as needed; and with the Publisher develops and manages relationships with key authors and literary agents. Day-to-day responsibilities include analyzing market trends, pursuing new authors and book projects, evaluating book proposals submitted by literary agents, presenting and costing new projects, negotiating major deal points for new projects, substantively editing manuscripts, and serving as internal champion for projects acquired. Responsible for business and leadership content categories that inspire (such as executive bios and corporate success stories) and build insights and skills (such as best practice training and development in specific business disciplines).
Publisher Support: prepares notes from meetings with authors and agents for Publisher; meets regularly with Publisher to review relationship management and business metrics on acquired projects; responds to Publisher’s requests; reviews proposals and follows up on leads from Publisher.
Knowledge: Solid market knowledge, proven leadership ability, proven success in acquisitions, proven ability to maintain strong relationships with internal and external constituencies. Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style is strongly preferred.
Work Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ editorial experience with at least 3 years of acquisitions and development experience.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in English, journalism, or related field.
General and/or Industry Knowledge: Knowledge of book publishing market— key competitors, authors, and agencies; some familiarity with online learning and e-course trends preferred. Knowledge and experience working in the business/leadership development product space strongly preferred
