Associate Acquisitions Editor

Associate Acquisitions Editor is a great position for someone with a desire to be a part of determining which books and what authors to publish. It involves working with the Associate Publishers and Publisher to identify, research, present, and facilitate the acquisition of books for Tommy Nelson, Nelson Gift, and Zondervan Gift. We are looking for a team player who understands market trends, recognizes compelling content and can identify with the Christian audience.


Editorial and Author Relations

  • Process submissions (review and respond to manuscripts)
  • Identify potential acquisitions and prepare documents for Editorial Board, including creating agendas, handling logistics, and taking notes
  • May interface with authors directly in regard to proposals and deal points 


  • Pull strong comparable titles and sales histories
  • Manage the SEO keyword and BISAC process 


  • Write catalog copy for approximately 60 titles per year
  • Write pub board proposals on schedule for bi-weekly meetings


Project Management

  • Write back cover copy
  • Work with authors and agents via phone and email
  • Assist acquisitions editors and associate publishers or publisher in creating high-profile publishing offers 


  • Work with Associate Publishers to support the acquisitions process
  • Assist in entering book information into metadata information system
  • Maintain expense reports and complete monthly statements


Knowledge: Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style, the Bible, and Christian publishing is required, as well as strong editorial and writing skills. This person needs a foundation in the book editorial process. Applicant also needs to have strong skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Power Point) and work well with a team of people. Problem solving skills as well as the ability to manage many responsibilities at once are also necessary.


Work Experience: 2–3 years in publishing


Education: Bachelor’s Degree in English, Writing, Journalism, Publishing or related field


Industry Knowledge: Clear understanding of the Christian publishing industry and the book editorial process.



  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with above average knowledge of English gramma
  • Strong writer experienced in writing catalog, sales or cover copy
  • Ability to anticipate needs, plan ahead, and effectively encourage planning ahead
  • Proven organizational skills, with ability to prioritize and manage a wide variety of tasks and resources across multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to professionally and cordially interact with authors and agents
  • Ability to distill numerous pieces of information and communicate key points to others
  • Keen eye for market trends and research
  • Structured and organized
  • Ability to quickly learn and use electronic databases and new software applications; maintain awareness of new and emerging technologies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with timely communication, especially expressing difficult/sensitive information tactfully
