Overview

The Content Management department at HarperCollins Publishers is seeking an Assistant to work on the composition and development of both print and digital products. HarperCollins Publishers strives to build the best-in-market publications, agnostic of format, to meet today’s rapidly changing market needs, thereby best serving our authors.

 

In this role, you will perform various tasks that include: structuring manuscripts with markup that will output to various formats, input formatting and typographical changes into book interiors as well as manage reprint corrections for digital titles. The ideal candidate will be someone with superior attention to detail, ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects, and with a keen interest in composition and typographical principles.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Manager of Content Management:

  • Preflight and troubleshoot interior book files
  • Make reprint or consumer rework corrections to ebooks
  • Create book interiors
  • Create cover files when needed
  • Review files for Quality Assurance
  • Assess, markup, and transform manuscript documents
  • Input typographic/typesetting changes
  • Interact with several different publishing systems including but not limited to: CMS, routing/workflow, tracking, and Digital Asset Management systems
  • Set and maintain project schedules and milestones
  • Act as a liaison between departments

Qualifications

  • Relevant coursework or 6 months to 1 year prior experience preferred
  • Knowledge of book publishing, particularly copyediting/proofreaders marks, is preferred
  • Strong awareness of current marketplace challenges and trends
  • Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign 6 and CC) preferred
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook) required
  • Familiarity with epub, epub validation requirements, and standards
  • Knowledge of XML, HTML(5), CSS(3), and eBook principles a plus
  • Familiarity and ability to work with both Mac and PC environments required
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to prioritize and outstanding organizational skills
  • Strong follow-up and initiative
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent grammar required
  • Ability to adapt to management direction and dynamic environments
