Harlequin is seeking an Assistant Editor with an interest in wholesome and sweet Christian romances to assist and support the Love Inspired Publishing Programs.

 

The Assistant Editor will be responsible for guiding all assigned materials through the editorial process under the direction of the senior editorial staff, evaluating solicited and unsolicited manuscripts in order to recommend titles for publishing in the Love Inspired and Love Inspired Suspense lines, author acquisition and management, and providing administrative and editorial support to the Executive Editor and the Senior Editor of Love Inspired franchise. The primary purpose is to ensure the ongoing and timely supply of high quality, saleable titles for the Love Inspired program.

Responsibilities

  • Provides editorial support to the Executive Editor and the Senior Editor of Love Inspired franchise, including such tasks as writing back cover copy, evaluating suitability of books for the program, providing revisions to authors and line editing, and overseeing copy editing and author approval/alterations.
  • Manages and develops an author base to elicit the highest quality of writing and storytelling, and working with respective author base to ensure correct editorial fit for the publishing strategy for the Love Inspired program.
  • Provides administrative and clerical support, including such tasks as booking meetings; managing requests from internal departments; and maintaining information in different editorial databases.
  • Assures timely delivery and quality of material input of all supplementary book components into production databases including art fact sheets, cover copy, prelim material, as well as cover briefs for senior and executive editors and art/design recommendations.
  • Provides support with Backlist/Reissue programs, which include recommending titles to publish, preparing art fact sheets, prelim packages, and back cover copy as assigned. Provides editorial input into packaging design in order to ensure that the key selling features of each scheduled title are reflected in the product packaging.
  • Processes all incoming and outgoing submissions within agreed upon systems and guidelines. Logs and distributes submissions.  Responds to unsolicited/unagented submissions (slush).  Forwards agented/solicited submissions to appropriate editors.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Strong administrative experience and/or aptitude
  • 1 to 3 years’ experience in the publishing industry
  • Flexible with the ability to manage and adapt to rapidly changing situations and circumstances
  • Strong communication, planning and organizational skills as well as attention to detail
  • Capacity to build trust/teamwork/collaboration and customer orientation
  • Good problem-solving, decision-making and prioritization skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint
